Course Description

Duration

5.0 Day(s)

Description

In this course you will acquire the skills needed to be effective administrators on IBM POWER5 pSeries systems that support Logical Partitioning(LPAR). You will learn how to configure and manage LPARs using the Hardware Management Console (HMC).

Audience

System Administrators, Technical Support Personnel, and Business Partners responsible for implementing LPAR on an IBM P5 systems.

Prerequisites

Attendees should be experienced AIX Systems Administration skills or have attended Systems Administration training such as AU14IE and AU16IE. The AW18 AIX Jumpstart course will be more appropriate if their prior experience is with UNIX variants other than AIX.

Objectives

On completion of this course you will be able to:
- Describe partitioning concepts available on the POWER5 pSeries systems, such as logical partitioning (LPAR), virtual console, virtualization, host partitions and dynamic partitioning
- Use the LPAR Validation Tool to plan an LPAR configuration
- Describe the rules and options associated with allocating resources
- Manage LPARs by setting up resource groups and dynamically change the resource configuration of LPARs.

- Configure and manage LPARs using the HMC interface and HMC commands
- Configure virtualization features
- Describe key system architectural elements of the POWER5 hardware as they relate to configuring LPAR resources
- Interpret physical and AIX location codes and relate them to the key hardware components
- Power on and power off the managed system
- Use the Hardware Management Console to manage users and permissions, software, startup and shutdown, remote access features, network configuration and security
- Understand and use HMC backup and restore, and the HMC disaster recovery procedures
- Configure and test the service tools on the HMC
- Use the HMC to backup and restore partition data
- Install an operating system in an LPAR
